How to stay cool and beat the heat
When the sultry weather is at its peak, it is very important to keep your cool to stay cool. If your mind is at ease, you would be in a better position to beat the heat. So what is it that keeps you cool? We give you a ready reckoner that will help you to keep your cool and stay cool.
YOGA. Nothing beats yoga to keep your body fit and free of stress. A brisk walk in the early morning followed with a few aashanas will not only keep you fit and fighting but also relieve you of all stress and botheration. Believe me, a stressed out mind and body is the biggest irritant, whether it's summer or winter.
When the weather is hot, it is particularly important to keep your mind free and stay calm, and yoga is the ultimate answer.
SWIMMING
Swimming is yet another activity, which is summer's ideal indulgence. Swimming is not only a great exercise that works on each and every muscle of the body but is also the ultimate coolant during hot weathers.
BREATHING FABRICS
What you wear is very important to stay comfortable and easy during the hot summers and humid monsoon. Fabrics that breathe and are loosely woven are ideal for this weather. Linen shirts and trousers are ideal but if the crushed look is not your style, go for linen blends that ease out the crushed look.
Fine cotton not only lets air pass through the fabric, it is skin-friendly too. Denim is cotton but since they are woven very tightly, they may not be very comfortable during this weather. However, denim blend with linen are doing great this season. Choose light colours as they reflect heat and sunlight.
AVOID DIRECT SUN
This is the season when the sun is closest to the earth and direct sun rays will not only be harsh but its ultraviolet rays may damage the skin. Try not to venture out during the day but if it is unavoidable, do not forget to apply sunscreen on the exposed body parts. Wearing a summer hat or carrying an umbrella is recommended as it will protect you from direct exposure to the sun and will prevent the skin from getting tanned.
KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED
Water is an ideal drink to cool your body, especially in this weather when you perspire a lot and eventually lose a lot of body fluids. Dehydration occurs when we lose more fluids than we consume. When choosing other fluids consider the caffeine and sugar content. Sweet drinks, calories and sugar draw fluids away from the muscles where they are needed. Alternatives are fruit juices, decaffeinated iced tea, herbal tea or coffee, carbonated water and unsweetened sports drinks. Drinking water is the best way to replace fluids.
Another way to increase your fluid intake is to choose foods with high water content such as lettuce, pears, tomatoes, oranges, apples, green beans, corn and bananas.
