Guidelines for Yoga

The term 'Yoga' is derived from the Sanskrit word 'Yuj,' which means 'to join' or 'unite.' In simple words, yoga is a way of establishing a dynamic equilibrium between our body, mind, and soul. Yogic exercises basically consist of asanas, which are nothing but postures or poses that help to stay healthy by preventing as well as treating a number of diseases. Just because most yogasanas involve stretching, it does not mean that yoga only comprises stretching exercises.

Yoga can help you to increase your strength and improve the flexibility of your body. Most of these exercises can be performed by any individual, irrespective of age, gender, and health status. However, some of them may be contraindicated in some conditions. Therefore, it is always advisable to start off doing yoga only under the guidance of a trained yoga expert. Yoga can help children in many ways such as improving their mental and physical abilities, besides maintaining a healthy body.

Some yogasanas can specifically help women to cope up with menstrual problems and pregnancy-related issues. Women tend to complain of back pain, arthritis, or weakness, usually after menopause. Yoga can help them in overcoming weakness, reducing stress, and increasing flexibility. It can also be use in the treatment of conditions like hypertension, obesity, diabetes mellitus, heart disease, and respiratory disorders. The regular practice of yoga can boost the defenses of the body, providing lifelong immunity against a number of dreadful illnesses.

Every yogasana must be performed slowly and systematically. No matter whether you take classes or join an institute to learn yoga, the core requirements remain the same. Here are some of the basics of yoga that you should follow to be on the safer side. There is no specific time for performing yogic exercises. However, the morning hours are considered to be the best time for yoga as you will feel fit and remain alert for the rest of the day. Besides it is always advisable to exercise on an empty stomach. Yogasanas should be done daily. Doing them off and on will not yield any satisfactory results.

Initially, you can practice yoga for about 15 minutes daily. Once you gain mastery, you can increase this time to an hour every day. When exercising, always ensure that your surroundings are neat and clean. Preferably practice yoga alone so that you do not get conscious or distracted. Never try to exercise with a heavy stomach. If you have just eaten, wait for 2 to 3 hours. Restrict your intake of unhealthy foods. On completing every asana, relax for about 10 seconds before proceeding further. Always wear loose-fitting cotton clothes when performing yoga. Women should avoid doing yoga during their menses.
