Steaming cure for a cold

Popping pills to fight a cold and sinusitis is certainly not the best option. For common ailments such as these, grandma's remedies can often do wonders. Try steam inhalation, an effective natural therapy that clears up nasal and bronchial passages. Hot steam provides immediate relief from nasal blockage and a scratchy throat.
"Steam inhalation reduces the swelling and edema of the upper respiratory tract and clears the congestion of mucous membranes," says an ENT specialist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. "Hot vapour moistens the air and stimulates the secretion of mucous membranes, which provides relief from throat irritation," he adds.
It has other benefits too. "If you supplement your diet with adequate Vitamin C and take regular steam, your immune system gets strengthened as a clear bronchial passage enhances the amount of oxygen inhaled and boosts the body's germ-fighting mechanism," says the ENT specialist.

"Steam inhalation acts like a gel that aids respiration," says an ENT expert at Max Healthcare. Experts say that adding a few drops of eucalyptus oil to the boiling water before inhalation helps to kill bacteria that can be a potential threat to the respiratory track.
How to inhale: There are special kettles available for steam inhalation. In case you don't have one, use any broad-based pot for boiling the water. Once the water starts steaming, cover your head with a thick towel and bend over the pot. Press a finger against one of the nostrils and breathe through the other. Repeat it five times. Do the same for the other nostril.
Once your nasal passage is clear, inhale from one nostril and exhale from the other. Do it five times. Alternate. Then inhale normally through both nostrils. Wash your face with cold water.
BENEFITS OF INHALATION · Treats common cold, sinusitis · Treats throat infections · Decongests the chest · Alleviates nasal and throat inflammation · Relieves fatigue, depression · Boosts the immune system. AVOID: If you are epileptic or have any other CNS problems · Congestive or other heart problems.
