Recording of the brainwaves is carried out with the help of device called electroencephalography i.e. EEG. It is not meant for the mind reading or the IQ measurement. EEG test is also known as the brainwave test.
It helps in finding the electronic activity of the brain. To find out the abnormality in the brain, the electronic impulses which communicate with the brain cells are measured by EEG.

Procedure During the test, the patient is asked to on the table or in a reclining chair with closed eyes. Functioning of the gray matter is measured at the first instance. Cerebral cortex the outer layer of the cerebrum carries out the higher brain functions such as voluntary muscle movement, memory, thought, and reasoning. The process is carried out by a technician. About dozen of electrodes are attached at specific sites on the head of the patient. The patient is asked to lie down and stay still during the test. It is because the movement of body parts affects the results shown by EEG. The signals received by recording machine are into a series of the wavy lines which are drawn onto the moving graph paper. Some instructions like deep and rapid breathing for several minutes or looking at flickering light etc. may be given to you. Sedatives are usually avoided as it results in inaccurate reading. Wireless transmission of electrical signals is also possible. These electrical signals can be stored in the computer memory or on the disk.
The test is not at all painful. In advanced technology EEG is combined with video monitoring of assault activity.
The electrodes are placed within the brain or within the skull through the surgical procedure as the wireless transmission is allowed. It helps to identify the unstable electrical impulses areas i.e. seizure foci more precisely.


Result The test is performed by a specially trained electroencephalographers and neurologists. The analysis and interpretation depends on the length of the EEG record, its complexity and difficulty. However, with the advancement in technology, EEG results can be obtained in a day or two. In case of patients in coma state, EEG results are obtained within an hour's time.


Consideration The patient is asked to wash hairs without using spray, oil or conditioner before the test. Consult your health care provider about the medicines intake before the tests.
Avoid intake of food containing caffeine before 8 hours of the test.
The test is without any discomfort or pain. Only the electrode stitching may give you a different feeling.
