Tips To Take Care Of Your Asthma

1. There are environmental factors that can trigger asthma like pollen, pollution, pet dander, certain molds, fumes, dust or odours. Avoiding these substances and protecting yourself against them is the best way to decrease the onset of an asthma attack.

2. If you are allergic to pollens then at times of high pollen use air conditioning or an air purifier.

3. If you have carpeted floors then either be regular in vacuuming them or replace them with solid surface like wooden floors or tiles.

4. Make sure that there is no mold growing in your house especially during monsoon.

5. If you have any leakage problem then get this plumbing rectified as moisture enhances mold growth.

6. Try using paint or tile instead of using wall papers.

7. Using fan in bathrooms to pull moisture from the air and also keeping windows open will help facilitate better air circulation.

8. Be regular in washing your bedding and upholstery.

9. Instead of upholstered furniture, try using furniture with removable slip covers that can be laundered.

10. Keep your house spacious with minimal furnishings as it is easier to clean.

11. If you have pets then keep them out of your bedrooms and bathe them regularly.

12. Get rid of house pests like cockroaches as they can also trigger asthma symptoms.

13. Check the filters on your air conditioner and dehumidifiers regularly. If dirty then get them replaced.

14. Drink 8-10 glasses of water every day as dehydration is a common source of poor body function.

15. Consume a low salt and low fat diet.

16. Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids that protect your lungs like fish, almonds, flax seeds, walnuts, pumpkin, onions, and fruits and vegetables. Include more whole grain cereals and wheat germ in your diet as they are rich in vitamin E, which may lower asthma risk.

17. While having your meals, eat slowly and chew your food well. Always try to eat less than your full capacity ad it bears down upon the chest giving a feeling of over fullness and discomfort.

18. Lifestyle changes like losing weight, giving-up smoking and regular exercising are very important that may also improve your asthma.

19. Breastfeeding your child provides a significant reduction in the risk of childhood asthma.

20. You should know about your medication its doses, use, side effects (if any). Discuss it with your doctor to learn more on your medicines and the lifestyle changes you should integrate.
