Parental Ability

All children call for love, care, guidance and protection from their parents. But children who are physically challenged need special care which will help to overcome or to reduce their disability. Parenting a special child is a little unique but it will help enhance the capabilities of your special child.

There are occasions when you as a parent may experience emotions like disbelief, shame, denial and helplessness on discovering that your child is not as normal as others of his/her age.

But remember you are the most influential person in your child’s life. An encouraging and supportive attitude will help your child overcome much of the limitations placed by the impairment. Such an environment will help your child develop positive feelings about himself or herself.

Parents of children with learning disabilities should especially get involved with the educational process, both at school and home, to ensure that optimal progress is made. You are your child’s most important teacher. You will be the steady guiding force for your child’s education until he/she can manage it by himself/herself. Encouraging age appropriate reading and writing, talking about current events and playing games will add to your child’s critical thinking process. Always praise your child for the positive qualities they exhibit during the whole course of doing homework not just when they finish their homework Keeping open lines of communication with your child will make him/her feel comfortable discussing his/her feelings with you.

Encourage your child to develop strengths and nurture talents in the things he/she enjoys the most. Help your child through social experiences with support and understanding. There will be times when you will be required to bravely face your child’s limitations and turning them into opportunities for growth.

Supporting your other children without disabilities may get difficult as they may feel that their brother or sister with learning disability is getting more attention than they are. They may get jealous or feel neglected. Parents should include their other children in any special routines established for the child with a learning disability.

LD can create a crisis between children and parents, and often the quality of the attachment is affected in a negative way. Parents are special in their own way but parents of special children with disabilities are uniquely special. Your constant support and patience is required in bringing up a special child. Always remember that parents are role models for their children, and children are quick to enact the behaviour of their parents. To develop a positive outlook in your child, it is first important to be optimistic yourself. A simple change in your attitude will transform the parenting of your child with a learning disability from challenging to easygoing.
