Eczema

Eczema Overview

Skin is one of the important organs of our body. It is one of the sensory organs that help in feeling objects. Some people may feel an itching sensation and hence they begin scratching their body throughout the day. One of the reasons for this could be a skin disease called eczema. People suffering from eczema should avoid extensive scratching as they may scrape off the top layers of their skin, thus facilitating the entry of germs.
Eczema is an inflammation of the skin which means that the skin appears swollen and reddish. Young children are more likely to get eczema as compared to adults. In babies, inflammation may occur at different parts of the skin such as skin near the face, around the ears, beneath the chin, arms or legs. Eczema that occurs over the face usually fades as the child grows but stays in the hand, elbow and areas at the back of ones knees. Eczema usually disappears with age and time.

Sources of Eczema
Different types of eczema and each type has a different cause. Some people may inherit eczema from their parents or family. If your family members have any allergies like asthma, or eczema, they are usually passed on to the younger generation. Such children have dry and itchy skin which is sensitive to heat, wool and rough surfaces. Some types of eczema may also occur as a result of touching animal fur or plants. Eczema may also be caused as a result of diseases such as cold.

Ways to avoid eczema

  • If your skin feels dry and you have an itchy rash, rush to the doctor immediately. If you are diagnosed with eczema, take the following preventive measures:
  • Avoid washing your skin with soap as it makes your skin dry. Instead, wash your skin with sorbolene cream.
  • Take a bath only once a day. Instead of rubbing, pat yourself dry. Rubbing the skin may make it sore.
  • Use bath oil in the bathroom instead of soap for washing yourself.
  • Try to bathe with warm water. Using too hot water may cause flare ups.
  • Use some moisturizer to make your skin soft and to prevent it from drying.
  • Always wear loose clothes (preferably cotton) to avoid abrasion by rough fabric.
  • Keep a note on the exact cause of eczema and inform your doctor of the same.
  • Apply some special medication prescribed by your doctor on the infected parts.
  • Do not forget to take your medication as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Stay in cool places and avoid warm atmosphere as it may worsen the problem.
  • Some people may suffer from flare ups of the skin which are caused by chemicals used in swimming pools. If this happens, avoid going to swimming in pools for a few days until you are relieved from the problem.
  • Keep your room clean and avoid foods that trigger your condition.
