How to Quit Smoking

Whenever you feel a strong desire to smoke, breathe deeply at least three times. Inhale deeply for about 10 seconds and then exhale very slowly. While exhaling, visualize your tension leaving your body. This exercise will not only help you to divert your mind away from the urge to smoke but will also make you relax physically as well as mentally. It also helps to calm you down when you are in a disturbed state of mind or are under stress.
Alcohol, sugar, and coffee are known to stimulate the craving for cigarette smoking too. So, try to stay away from these temptations. Always remember that the urge to smoke lasts for only a few minutes. Once you overcome this urge, you will be able to quit the habit very easily. Instead of smoking after dinner or lunch, try sipping a cup of mint tea or have a peppermint candy. Many people try to quit smoking by taking some substitute. However, before adapting a substitute, make sure that the substitute is not harmful for your body. Substitutes like chewing tobacco, betel leaves, or snuff are equally bad. Cinnamon sticks, chewing gum, or artificial cigarettes make better substitutes.
Exercising regularly can definitely be of help in the quitting process. You, and only you, can help yourself. Nobody else can. Destroying all your cigarettes, jotting down the benefits of quitting smoking, and celebrating every successful attempt to control the urge to smoke, are some of the factors that will encourage you to stick to your decision. Support from your family members and friends can also be precious as you put efforts from your side. Don't lose heart, if you fail in your initial attempts. Keep trying and you will gradually succeed. Quitting smoking will not only make you and your loved ones happy but will also add some more healthy years to your life.
