Eyes starts developing problems such as blurred vision, eye-sight problems etc. with age. Hence, it is commonly believed that eye problems are related only to the older ages. However, eye problems can trap you at any point of time in your life. Due to the change in lifestyles and insufficient diets, many teenagers as well as adults can be seen suffering from eye-sight problems. Eyes being one of the most sensitive parts of our body, it becomes our responsibility to take some extra care to retain a good eye-sight. Here are the eight essential tips to keep our eyes protected from the problems.
Wear Sunglasses
The best way to protect your eyes from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays is by wearing sunglasses. It has been found that wearing sunglasses reduces the damages caused by UV rays up to 18 times. The UV rays are responsible for causing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in adults. The blue light present in the spectrum of UV radiation can also damage the cells of the eyes. Wearing sunglasses helps in preventing the entry of such harmful rays inside the eye cells. Sunglasses with 99 to 100 per cent UV protection along with yellow or amber lenses can reduce the eye risks to a great extent. While buying sunglasses, make it sure that the eyes are entirely protected and wrap around the sides so that rays can not leak through.
Leave aside contacts during sleep
Contacts are specially used by the one who dislikes wearing glasses. However, contacts must be left aside while sleeping. It is because, dirt and bacteria can get trapped between the contact and the eyes causing irritation and infection. Doctors can recommend special contact that can be used while sleeping for some specific number of nights. However, even eyes need oxygen and rest and hence the contacts must be removed whenever not in use. Users must follow the instructions and clean the contact regularly to avoid vision problems.
Regular Physical Check-Up
Some diseases are directly linked with the eye problems. Especially, person with diabetes and high blood pressure are likely to get eye problems. These diseases are responsible for the onset of conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma and ocular hypertension. Therefore, regular physical check-ups become essential for people with diabetes and high blood pressure to avoid future eye problems. Even a healthy person is advised to check their eyes at least once in every two years. These check-ups would help in early diagnosis of eye problems, if any.
Exercise regularly
Excess weight is linked to hypertension and high cholesterol that affects the flow of blood to the eyes. Studies have revealed that women with a body mass index of more than 30 are more prone to cataracts. These complications can be avoided just by exercising regularly or even by walking 30 minutes a day. Exercising regularly will not only help in improving circulation but would also aid in weight loss.
Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle
Eating a balanced diet and avoiding habits such as smoking can reduce the risks of eye problems. Include colorful or dark green vegetables and number of fruits in your daily diet. These foods are believed to contain antioxidants that help in reducing the risk of cataracts. It has been proven that the smokers are at a higher risk of developing age-related macular degeneration and cataracts as compared to non-smokers.
