When hypothyroidism is associated with goiter (swelling of the thyroid gland) due to iodine deficiency, increasing ones intake of iodine can cure the condition. However, in cases where hypothyroidism is autoimmune in origin, the patient needs to take the thyroid hormone extraneously, often lifelong. Trying alternative therapies before starting off with thyroxine is a good idea as some cases could respond to them.
