What is a balanced diet?
A balanced diet is defined as one which contains a variety of food nutrients in such quantities and proportions that the need for proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and water, is successfully met. These requirements should be adequately met for maintaining health, vitality and general well-being. A balanced diet saves you from nutritional deficiencies. It can be achieved through a blend of different food groups.
Food nutrients are organic and inorganic complexes contained in food. Each nutrient has specific functions in the body. The food nutrients are divided into macronutrients and micronutrients.
- Macronutrients: These comprise of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. They are called so as they form the bulk of food.
- Micronutrients: These are vitamins and minerals. They are called micronutrients as they are required in small amounts which may vary from a fraction of a milligram to several grams.
