(Speciality: Doctor)
About 3-5% of pregnant women develop jaundice and elevated liver enzymes. The causes of jaundice in pregnancy are: viral hepatitis, hyperemesis gravidarum (excessive vomiting in pregnancy), acute fatty liver, cholylithiasis (gall bladder stones) or cholecystitis (inflammation of the gall bladder), idiopathic (no known cause), pre-eclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) etc. Itching is one of the predominant symptoms of raised liver enzymes. The chances of complications are very rare but are present. Management and treatment depends upon the cause of jaundice. Most of the times the ailment resolves after delivery but the only concern is foetal and maternal health during the disease. Regular follow up with the gynaecologist is required to keep a check on the health status of the mother and the foetus (in womb) and also to investigate at regular intervals to monitor the status of the ailment.
