Taking care of your Eyes
Overview Eyes are surely one of the important parts of our body. Eyes provide vision through which we can see the things as they look. However, everyone is not lucky enough to have this wonderful part in their body. In your daily life, you may across number of person who can not see the world around them. People who are unable to see completely are termed as blind. There are some people who can see things with only one light, some can see only the things that are close to them while some can see the objects kept away from them. There are different types of vision problems that people may come across at different stages of their life. Usually, as you grow old vision power decreases and you might lose your vision partially or completely.
Some of the common vision problems that people may come across are as follows:
- Can only see the things if they are close.
- See two of something
- See everything blurry or fuzzy.
- Can see only in presence of good light
- Can see better some days than others
- Can view the things with only one eye
- Can not see the things at all (blind)
How does vision problem occur?
People lose their vision because of several reasons. However, there are three common reasons behind vision problems:
- Some people are blind or have vision problems since birth.
- Vision problems may also occur due to some disease.
- Some people may lose their vision in an accident.
Doctors believe that about 90% of eye injuries in children could have been prevented. About 40% of vision problems occur due to the accidents at home. Boys are more likely to have vision problems during playing sports. Sports which needs bat and balls are most dangerous for eyes. Hence, sports like cricket, tennis, football etc should be played by taking proper precautions. Most of the injuries occur when something sharp is thrown or poked at a person.
Looking after your eyes
One can not predict the occurrence of an accident in their life. However, one can take necessary precautions at home to prevent eye injuries. If you are engaged in doing some activities at home, always protect your eyes by wearing safety glasses. You must wear safety glasses in case you are busy with:
- Spraying cleaners or chemicals.
- Gardening, mowing the lawn or cutting back plants
- Painting
- Learning how to use the power tools.
- Watching or playing with fireworks. Do not leave children alone with the fireworks.
Many a times, children lose their vision or affect their vision while playing outdoor games. Games which require throwing a ball or hitting a ball are likely to cause eye problems. Therefore, children must be taught to play safely. Care must be taken when they are involved in games like cricket, football, tennis etc. Some of the preventive steps that you must take while playing are as follows:
- Always wear glasses or sunglasses which grip the sides of your head. Impact-resisting glasses provide the best safety to the eyes.
- Always wear helmets or face guard while playing the sports like cricket.
- Do not wear contact lenses while playing sports as it can be dangerous if you are hit in the face.
