Introduction
Many organ works together to keep us active throughout the day. Brain, heart, lungs, kidney are some of the prominent organs which helps to keep us active by doing their work constantly. Hands are one of the prominent organs that help to perform our daily activities. Let it be playing games, eating foods, reading a book, watching a TV, washing the utensils or even capturing an image from your camera, without hands one can not think of accomplishing these tasks. Consciously or unconsciously, hands play a vital role in carrying out small as well as big tasks in our routine life.
Hands are the useful parts of our body which is present at the end of our arms. Functionality of fingers and thumbs makes our hand different to the hands or paws of other animals. Our thumb is capable of working with the smallest finger as well as our ring finger. This type of functioning helps us to perform much more complicated things. Thumbs help us in picking the things up as well as using tools. Besides these, hands can also perform functions like holding, carrying, using computer, writing and doing millions other things. Let us try to know more about our hands and ways to keep them safe and healthy.
Some basics about our hands
Our hand consists of four fingers and a thumb. The thumb is said to be opposable as it can move towards the fingers and help them to do the work. Thumb has two bones while each finger has three bones. The hand is attached to the arm by the wrist. Some of the bones statistics related to the hands are:
- The hand has total of about 27 bones.
- The wrist consists of 8 bones.
- 5 bones in the palm links to the digits (fingers and thumb)
- There are 2 main sets of muscles and tendons. Flexor muscles are fastened to the underside of the forearm while extensors are connected to the top of the forearm. Flexor muscles help in bending the fingers and thumb and extensors help to straighten them out.
Looking after your Hands
Taking proper care of your hands will not only keep them healthy but would prevent lot of diseases. Most of the diseases occur due to the food that we intake. Sometime, the germs may enter in our digestive tract as a result of eating foods by unwashed hands. Therefore, every doctor suggests to wash hands carefully before taking meals. Some of the easy and useful tips to stay away from diseases by keeping the hands clean are as follows:
- Wash your hands, wrists and the surfaces between your fingers with the help of soap.
- Always keep your nails clean as most of the dirt accumulates inside the nails. Nails must be washed carefully, especially after gardening or cleaning the house.
- Keep your hands clean before preparing the meals and before having them.
- Do not forget to wash your hands after you have been to the toilet.
- Always wear gloves in winter season to keep your hands warm. There are different types of gloves available for performing different jobs such as gardening, painting or cleaning. Use them!!!
- Use mild pH soap (like Dove) for washing your hands.
