Understanding your feet
With the advancement in technology, there are numerous ways to cover and visit different places. Since the discovery of wheel, human beings have developed various methods to go to places without spending much time.
Cycles, bikes, cars and airplanes are some of the fastest means of communication. But, no matter how much development has been done, the basic tool for human beings to cross distances remains the same, your feet. It is hard to imagine a life without feet. Hence, everyone should try to give some time and care to this wonderful part of our body.
Each foot consists of 26 bones. Big toe has two bones while the other toes have three which are called as phalanges. Metatarsal is the middle part of your feet which comprises of 5 bones. The heel bone and the talus are the two strongest bones of your feet as they carry major part of your body. They are spread in the region from your ankle to the middle of your foot. The talus is the bone which is present above your heel and below the shin bone.
Give some care to your feet
Like every other part of your body feet also requires care to work efficiently. Foot problems like a toe, foot or leg amputation can be prevented by giving small exercises to the feet. Foot care is very much important for people with diabetes. However, feet care is also important for the one who often complains about:
- Loss of feeling in your feet.
- Changes related to shape of your feet.
- Foot ulcers or sores that take long time to heal.
Loss of feeling in your feet may occur due to the nerve damage. This condition becomes serious when you can not feel the pebble inside your socks, which can cause a sore. You may also be unaware of a blister caused by poorly fitting shoes due to loss of feeling in your feet. Such foot injuries can cause ulcers which eventually lead to amputation. Keeping the blood glucose in control and taking care of your feet can avoid serious foot problems.
Tips for keeping the feet healthy
It is very essential to give a little time everyday to your feet so as to prevent health problems. Check your feet everyday and see the presence of any cuts, sores, red spots, swelling or infected toenails. Give proper medication if you find anyone of these on your feet. If the healing process is slow, immediately contact your doctor.
Wash your feet everyday with warm water. Avoid soaking your feet as your skin may get dry. While bathing make sure that the water is not too hot or cold. After bath, make sure that your feet are dried well. Always dry the area between your toes and use talcum powder or cornstarch to keep the skin between the toes clean.
Always wear shoes and socks to protect your toes. Always wear socks with shoes to prevent blisters and sores. Socks with no seams are considered to be the best for the toes. Check the shoes before wearing as pebbles or stones may create injury. Always wear shoes that are comfortable and properly fit to protect your feet.
Activities like dancing, walking, swimming and bicycling are always good for feet. Avoid stressful exercise such as hard running or jumping. Avoid smoking as it reduces the blood flow to your feet. Avoid use of razors, corn plasters, or liquid corn as they can damage your skin. Avoid lotion or cream between your toes as it may lead to infections.
