Flourine

Fluorine is a highly reactive element in nature and being so it is never found in its elemental gaseous form but only in combined form. About 96% of the fluoride in the body is found in bones and teeth. Fluorine is essential for the normal mineralization of bones and formation of dental enamel.

Function:

  • Preventing dental caries
Dietary Requirements:
  • Male: 1.5 to 4 mg per day
  • Female: 1.5 to 4 mg per day

Sources:
Plant sources: Garlic, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Spinach, Pistachio nuts, Tea
Animal Sources: Sea Food, Cheese
Others: Salt, Water (fluoride content - 0.5 to 0.8 mg/litre of drinking water)
Deficiency Symptoms: (When fluoride content less than 0.5mg/litre in drinking water)

  • Dental caries

Toxicity: (When fluorine content more than 1.2 mg/litre in drinking water)

  • Dental Fluorosis (mottled enamel, brownish black teeth, pitting)
  • Skeletal Fluorosis (pain and stiffness of joints, neuropathy, calcification and osteoporosis)

  • Fluorine is often called as a two-edged sword because
  • Fluorine is found in water as well as the food grown in areas where fluorine is present in the soil and water
  • Well water does not contain fluorine
