Coenzyme Q
Our bodies have a very complex metabolic machinery. Various enzymes form the support system of this metabolic machinery and thus ensures its' effective functioning. Coenzyme Q10 is one such enzyme.
CoQ10 is produced by the human body and is necessary for the basic functioning of cells. CoQ10 levels are reported to decrease with age and to be low in patients with chronic diseases such as heart conditions, muscular dystrophies, Parkinson's disease, cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS. Some prescription drugs may also lower CoQ10 levels.
Coenzyme Q and its benefits in the health arena:-
High blood pressure (hypertension)
Preliminary research suggests that CoQ10 causes small decreases in blood pressure (systolic and possibly diastolic).
Breast cancer
In patients with many different types of cancer; limited studies have suggested that coenzyme-Q may induce tumor regression in patients with breast cancer. This agent may have immunostimulatory effects.
Several studies in women with breast cancer report reduced levels of CoQ10 in diseased breast tissue or blood. It has been suggested by some researchers that raising CoQ10 levels with supplements might be helpful. However, it is not clear if CoQ10 is beneficial in these patients, or if the low levels of CoQ10 may actually be a part of the body's natural response to cancer, and thus helping to fight the disease. Supplementation with CoQ10 has not been proven to reduce cancer, and has not been compared to other forms of treatment for breast cancer.
Gum disease (periodontitis)
Preliminary human studies suggest possible benefits of CoQ10 taken by mouth or placed on the skin or gums in the treatment of periodontitis. Reduction in bleeding, swelling, and pain are reported.
Heart protection during surgery
Preliminary research suggests that CoQ10 causes small decreases in blood pressure (systolic and possibly diastolic).
HIV/AIDS
There is limited evidence that natural levels of CoQ10 in the body may be reduced in people with HIV/AIDS. There is no reliable scientific research showing that CoQ10 supplements have any effect on this disease.
Heart protection during surgery:
Most studies of CoQ10 for heart protection during bypass surgery have used CoQ10 taken orally. However, it is also sometimes given intravenously.
Children (younger than 18 years)
There is not enough scientific information to recommend the safe use of Coenzyme Q10 in children. A qualified healthcare provider should be consulted before considering its use. In theory, allergic reactions to supplements containing CoQ10 may occur.
It can also be administered through the veins (intravenous) or in capsule form.
In conclusion, CoQ10 is not only very important in managing disease conditions but is also essential for normal functioning of the body. So next time your energy levels seem low or you feel tired and drained out, you know you should ask your physician to help you with a prescription of CoQ10!
