What you should be eating if you have Kidney Stones

Kidney stones can sometimes be very painful. While these episodes of pain need to be tackled by the use of painkillers, once the patient has settled down with the pain subsided, care in diet becomes almost a compulsion. Small stones are usually left alone, but larger ones or those that are giving rise to obstructive symptoms are got rid of either surgically or by a process known as lithotripsy.

The patient is advised to drink plenty of water, void urine whenever there is an urge to urinate, and to stick to an alkaline diet as far as possible. Regular vigorous exercises may be useful in dislodged stones but are certainly useful in preventing their formation.

People with calcium and magnesium phosphate and carbonate stones are usually given an acid ash diet. This diet advocates the consumption of cereals, non-vegetarian food, nuts, and protein rich food. Salt is allowed in moderation. Bakery products, milk, fruits, and vegetables are to be avoided as far as possible. An alkaline ash diet is recommended for patients with uric acid and cysteine stones. This diet is the exact opposite of the acid ash diet, whereby bakery items, milk, fruits, and vegetables are permissible but cereals, meat, nuts, and high-protein foods are disallowed.

Individuals with calcium oxalate stones are advised a low oxalate diet in which certain foods are restricted, namely beet, greens, beans, spinach, tea, tomatoes, potatoes, dried figs, cocoa, chocolates, and calcium-rich foodstuff.

Most people do not know how to tell the difference between acidic foods from alkaline foods. So, here's a golden rule to follow. Cereals, pulses, nuts and non-vegetarian foods are mostly acidic in nature. Thus, products like whole wheat bread, wheat cereals, cheese, corn, eggs, lentils, macaroni, spaghetti, noodles, meat, fish, poultry, peanuts, rice, and walnuts are all acid producing foods. On the other hand, milk, fruits, dried fruits, and vegetables are mostly alkaline. Some examples of alkali producing foods are almonds, dried apricots, beans, beet greens, dates, figs, dried peas, raisins, and spinach.

Foodstuff prepared using baking soda or baking powder is also known to be alkaline to the body. Butter, coffee, fats, sugar, tapioca, and tea are substances that are basically neutral in nature.

It is possible to prevent the formation of renal calculi by increasing your water intake to get a urine output of at least 2-2.5 liters per day. Decrease your consumption of citrus fruits like orange, sweet lime, and lemon as these contain high amounts of citrate. Green leafy vegetables should not be eaten in large quantities as they are rich in oxalate.

A diet that is low in protein, sodium, calcium, and nitrogen is recommended. Chocolates, nuts, and cola beverages are best avoided. Vitamin D and calcium supplements should never be taken indiscriminately for prolonged periods as they can increase the calcium oxalate levels in the body and lead to kidney stones.
