Spirit of the season
It is important to follow a certain diet pattern keeping the seasons in mind. Mainly, our country has three major seasons: summer (grishma), monsoon (varsha), autumn (sharad), and in northern India there's of course winter.
However, we will concentrate on the diets to be followed for summer, monsoon and autumn. Summer: This is the season when the heat or the pitta qualities are at their peak. As a result, the atmosphere is dry and hot, therefore affecting the different constitutions in different ways.
Pitt people are most uncomfortable in this season. They not only experience a marked fall in their energy levels but they also feel thirsty, uncomfortable and suffer loss of appetite as they feel it's too hot to eat.
Pitt people should eat lots of cooling foods like watermelon, muskmelon, cucumber, vegetables, sherbets, salads and sprouts. They should avoid too much of non-vegetarian foods in summer. They should also avoid spices with a garam tasir like ginger, garam masala, laung, etc. They should not exercise in the heat.
Kaphaj people should eat all foods but should take care to finish their meals early as late dinners are unhealthy for them. But otherwise, this season is bearable for kaphaj people.
Vata people are the most comfortable in this season and they can eat all kinds of foods. However, they should increase their water intake as this season is very dehydrating and may result in drying effects on the vata people which may lead to indigestion and constipation. Monsoon: Pitt people feel very healthy and well during this season. This is the season when pitt people can eat everything, like sweet, sour and salty foods. But they must watch out against preserved foods as their digestion can get upset with too much of sour pickle and vinegar.
Kaphaj people feel very bloated and lethargic and therefore must watch out against overeating food which are kaphaj in nature. These include sweet watery foods like juices and rice.
Vataj people are comfortable in this season and can eat everything including chaatpapadi, pickles and sweet and sour chutneys. Autumn: This is the season when the atmosphere has excess of the vat and pitt elements; therefore the most affected are the vata and the piitaj.
Vata people should eat regular small meals in this season and must not skip breakfast. Bitter and sweet tastes are good for the pittaj person. Fluids should be taken in copious amounts to maintain hydration levels. Kaphaj persons should watch out against taking afternoon naps, overeating and alcohol.
