Home remedies for Dengue
Dengue is an infectious viral disease that is transmitted by mosquitoes of the species Aedes aegypti. Sudden high fever (about 105ºF), acute body pain, and severe headaches mark the onset of the disease. These are later followed by malaise; red rashes all over the body, especially on the chest and lower limbs; retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain; nausea or vomiting; and abdominal pain.
The patient’s condition worsens with dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), causing internal bleeding as well bleeding from the nose, mouth, and gums. The symptoms usually last for 5 to 15 days. Treatment mainly focuses on fever management. In addition to drug therapy, which helps to alleviate symptoms, speedy recovery can be ensured with proper bed rest and a few dietary considerations.
Eating a well balanced diet with emphasis on green leafy vegetables can provided the essential vitamins and minerals that can ward off the infection. Chewing two cloves of garlic or drinking hot garlic vegetable soup can decrease the multiplication of viruses. To maintain the water and electrolyte balance of the body, oral rehydration solution (ORS) should be given. This also helps in flushing out the viruses through the fluids excreted by the body.
Eating red rice can quicken the healing process in dengue. Drinking hot soups, rasam, and herbal teas can generate heat in the body and prevent chills. Roots of amaltas or leaves of coriander can be used as a tonic for reducing the fever. Further, consuming a concoction of fenugreek leaves (methi) or basil leaves (tulsi) can soothe and cleanse the system and also ease symptoms. Orange juice, amla or amla juice, and grapefruit can promote antibody production. Vitamin C present in these fruits can aid in improving cellular immunity and preventing dengue hemorrhagic fever.
There are also certain foods, which can exacerbate the condition. Caffeine and alcohol, known for their diuretic properties, are best avoided to prevent dehydration. Avoiding junk food with empty calories, sugary products, and fried foods is a must, as they accentuate the symptoms of the disease and fail to provide the necessary nutrition for bettering health.
