How many times in a day do you brush your teeth? How often do you floss them? Do you visit your dentist regularly? You are often asked these questions during your school days; but as you age, you become careless about your dental health and suffer from hordes of teeth and gum related complaints. Here are some essential tips on dental care right from maintaining your basic dental health to taking proper care before and after dental procedures and surgeries.

Tips

It is better to buy small tubes rather than the large ones as some pastes have a tendency to harden in the tube.
Use whitening toothpastes only once a day, as whitening toothpastes in excessive amounts, makes teeth more sensitive.
Do not put too much toothpaste on the brush as it will foam up & make you want to spit and rinse too soon.
Do not wet your brush before applying the paste as it alters the action of the bristles & prevents them removing plaque effectively.
Take proper care of your child’s teeth. Developing good brushing habits in your children is very important.
Always store the toothpaste out of child’s reach to prevent him/her eating it.
Do not forget to replace your child’s toothbrush every 2-3 months, and after a heavy infection, flu and other infectious diseases.
Be sure that your children never use each other’s toothbrushes.
Areas where even the bristles of toothbrush cannot reach, for such areas the use of dental floss is recommended.
Flossing is an important dental procedure that supplements brushing, and helps in improving your dental health.
Dental floss is a special kind of nylon/plastic thread that is passed into the space between the teeth where even the bristles cannot reach.
While flossing, glide the floss very gently between your teeth. Avoid harsh movements, as well as snapping or forcing the floss.
Do not forget to floss behind your back teeth. Finish your flossing by rinsing your mouth with drinking water.
Regular flossing helps to remove plaque (small particles and bits of food that can not be removed with the toothbrush).
Bad breath, also known as “Halitosis”, can develop due to many reasons.
