How many times in a day do you brush your teeth? How often do you floss them? Do you visit your dentist regularly? You are often asked these questions during your school days; but as you age, you become careless about your dental health and suffer from hordes of teeth and gum related complaints. Here are some essential tips on dental care right from maintaining your basic dental health to taking proper care before and after dental procedures and surgeries.

I do periodical scaling every 6 months, and after some time, mild bleeding on my gums starts. Can you please advice?
(Speciality: Doctor)

Bleeding gums is a very common problem and most commonly arises when gums get infected due to inadequate oral hygiene. Periodical scaling and polishing every 6 months is a very good practice that you can follow, but it is not enough to keep your gums in perfect health. Scaling is adjunctive to the oral hygiene measures that you need to follow daily. It is very important to brush your teeth twice daily with a medium or soft bristled tooth brush, and if possible, try to include flossing in your dental health regime. Rinse your mouth after every meal. It hardly takes time but is very good practice for maintaining healthy oral hygiene. Follow this for at least 2 weeks and you will notice improvements. If the problem still persists then it is advisable to check with your dentist to rule out the underlying cause for the same.
