All of us remember the story of the oak and the rushes, where the oak used to boast about his strength all the time and laugh at the rushes because they were meek and bowed down to even the gentle winds. Finally however, when there was a windstorm, the rushes survived it unscathed, whereas the proud oak got completely uprooted. This applies to our lives too. Those who are flexible and open-minded can easily adapt themselves to circumstances and move on with their lives, whereas rigid people tend to have a number of mental blocks and hence break down completely when times are unfavorable.
The same applies to the body too. Individuals who are flexible and have a supple spine are known to stay healthy and live for long as compared to their stiffer counterparts. According to Chinese medicine, bending exercises remove any obstacles within the body that interfere with the flow of the life energy ‘chi’ through various channels of the body. There is a similar concept in Ayurveda also, where the energy wheels or ‘chakras’ are known to spin healthily only when the person assumes yogic postures, does pranayama, and also meditates to regulate this energy flow.
People who indulge in workouts to increase their flexibility and ensure that all the joints of their body are exercised to the full range of movements are known to live for long and stay relatively disease-free all their life. They tend to look younger than their age because their physical as well as mental flexibility retards their aging process. So, if you wish to make sure that you don’t suffer too much in your old age, work towards it from now itself and you will never regret it. Everything in life is relative and temporary; so, try not to take matters too seriously all the time. This way, you will make life more beautiful for yourself as well as for others.
