Eat to Live. Don’t Live to Eat.

Eat to Live  Samosas, pav vadas, pizzas, burgers, farsan, mithai… the list to make our mouth water is never ending. There’s absolutely no harm in enjoying your favorite foods but you should never forget the truth that you must ‘eat to live’ and not ‘live to eat.’ People who follow the latter find themselves addicted to food just as smokers and alcoholics are addicted to tobacco and alcohol, respectively.

Often, these people don’t realize that they are only trying to fill a void in their life by food. This only gives them temporary pleasure and paves the way for the development of a number of diseases related to overeating or binging on junk food. A person who eats to live often lives longer than his counterpart who is a gourmand because the former plans his diet, carefully selecting what is healthy and giving in to temptations only occasionally, that too in moderation.

People who live to eat do not listen to their body. They only follow their heart and eventually suffer from heart disease. Their craving for salty and fatty foods gives rise to hypertension, whereas their indulgence in sweets, fried items, and other high-calorie foods gets them obese and triggers diabetes. Those that love spicy and pungent food pay a price for their gratification by suffering from gastritis, peptic ulcers, and irritable bowel syndrome, to name just a few gastrointestinal conditions.

Hence, it makes sense to eat wisely, knowing the consequences of eating the things that you do. After all, living a disease-free and long life with the freedom to eat a little of whatever you like, whenever you want to, is much better than hogging for a few years of your life and then spending the rest of your life trying to restrict your diet or swallowing pills to manage various disease conditions that could have easily been prevented, if only you had better self-control!
