We’re taught about the importance of trees right from the time that we start schooling or maybe even prior to that. We look around us and realize that we need trees in our lives all the time; but yet, no one is bothered. Each one of us is enjoying the fruits of someone else’s toil and are still shamelessly waiting for someone else to plant trees while we encourage afforestation in the name of civilization and progress.

For all those that seem to be suffering from selective amnesia so that they can conveniently forget and neglect what they don’t want to muddle their heads with, here’s a reminder that should ring a bell, taking you back to your school days. So, here we go…
Â
Trees give us food or food for our food if we’re non-vegetarian. Trees give us shelter. Trees give out oxygen for us to breathe. Trees prevent soil erosion. We need wood for various purposes and this wood comes from the trees. Most of our medicines and cosmetics have some component or the other derived from the plant kingdom.
Â
If the present trend of felling trees continues, it won’t be very late before mankind pays for his own actions. Floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, cyclones, famine, draught, diseases – you name them – Mother Nature has them all lined up for you. Oh foolish man! Instead of wasting your time, energy, and money on developing nuclear weapons or trying to reach another planet, use your resources to make this earth more habitable, not only for your selfish self but also for all the living beings that have a right to survive too, at least in their own territories.
Â
But of course, why would we care? When we care a damn about fellow human beings and enjoy exploiting or executing one another, the trees and other creatures are lower consciousnesses after all. Cheers to the beginning of the end!
